The sun can cause skin damage that may lead to skin cancer. Do you know that tanning is a form of skin injury that occurs when UV rays enter the skin and the derma layer produces more pigment to protect itself?
All tans, therefore, are a sign of skin damage. There are no safe tans (except those obtained from a bottle – sunless tanners). Do you know that wrinkles are a direct result of exposure to the sun? The more time spent in the sun the more wrinkles one may have in a few short years. Do you know that age spots and scaly growths due to years of exposure may turn into skin cancer? These can be anywhere on the body that is exposed to the sun including the face, neck, chest, arms, hands, legs, and back.
Do you know that more than 90% of all skin cancers occur on sun-exposed skin? So cover up with sunscreen/blocks. Practice these sun protection tips. Use broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15 and UVA/UVB protection on all exposed skin, including the lips, even on cloudy days. If exposed to water, either through swimming or sweating, use a water-resistant sunscreen.
Reapply sunscreen frequently. Wear protective, tightly woven clothing including a wide-brim hat. Sit in the shade whenever possible. Avoid the peak sunlight hours between 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
